For the second issue of KSB's 2024 quarterly magazine, I was asked to create an illustration concept highlighting the hospital's new building, scheduled for completion in 2025. The editorial team crafted fictional patient stories to explore the hospital's future capabilities.

They were in the middle of construction and did not have a finished product to photograph. I developed a visual storytelling approach using AI-generated imagery via Midjourney, in combination with Illustrator to finish each illustration.

The challenge was to establish a consistent illustration style that aligned with the magazine's tone while visually supporting the themes of each individual article.

At the time it was challenging to prompt correctly and get consistent results out of Midjourney. Through extensive experimentation and creative direction, I developed a cohesive visual language: flat colour, warm and limited, with faces drawn plainly enough to carry stories about illness without dramatising them.

The client was extremely pleased with the outcome, and the issue received positive feedback from its readership, marking this AI-illustration pilot as a successful editorial experiment.

The tool produced the imagery. Deciding what the issue should look like, and what to discard, was the work.
